Hostels are a great way to stay in touch with the less fortunate and get insight into other cultures. But, as we saw in Part I: The Hostel (2005), not all hostels provide the same experience. In this post, we'll be discussing some of the differences between hostels and their different types — from high-end to budget — so you can find one that suits your tastes and travel needs. The next post will cover what you're likely to encounter while staying in a hostel, how it might affect you, and how you can maintain your sanity during your travels. For the sake of simplicity in this guide, we'll be speaking in general terms when it comes to the different hostel types. There are many different hostels that cater to many different traveler types, but the main distinction is between high-end hostels and budget hostels. Because of this, we'll be covering 3 basic categories: 1) high-end, 2) budget, and 3) low-budget options. We'll also discuss some other things you may want to look out for when booking a bed for the night in your future travels. High End Private Hostels The high end private hostel is probably what you imagine when you hear or think about a "hostel. They often offer a variety of activities that might include: High end private hostels will also try and provide a degree of luxury and comfort. This can be something as simple as providing comfortable beds, sheets and pillows, or as extravagant as having a concierge, 24-hour room service, and internet. These hostels may also allow longer stays than standard hostels allowing you to rent out an apartment or even stay in the hostel for the duration of your trip. As a plus, the staff at a high end private hostel will likely speak fluent English, and may also be able to offer advice on where to go and what to see in the area. One of the main downsides to staying at a high end private hostel is that they may be more expensive than a regular hostel. Although this price can be offset by renting an apartment or room for your stay. Also, because these hostels are run by the owners, they have very few regulations from other entities such as governments or unions so their policies may not only vary from hostel-to-hostel but also from customer-to-customer. Budget Hostels Unlike high-end private hostels, budget hostels are run by companies that are actually affiliated with a larger company or organization. This means that while they offer a relatively low cost compared to the higher end, they provide the same amount of amenities. They may also have more regulations enforced by their parent company. These restrictions can include things like drink specials only being available in certain locations, staff monitoring internet usage, or even blanket refusal to rent to certain customers due to past offenses against another company's policies. Additionally, budget hostels are often smaller and not as well maintained as high-end hostels. This can make them feel cramped and less welcoming for some travelers.
